Argentine-born photographer Diego Uchitel moved from Buenos Aires to the United States after high school to attend film school and eventually find his true calling in photography . He has been photographing the world's most beautiful subjects for thirty-five years. Uchitel is renowned for his elegantly arresting photographs. His work is often described as less photographic and more painterly. Uchitel's photographs have been featured in Elle Magazine, Vanity Fair, Harper's Bazaar, German and Spanish Vogue, Vogue Hommes, The New York Times Sunday Magazine, D , Surface, Premiere, Citizen K, and Rolling Stone. Diego has had two shows at Ralph Pucci, with an upcoming show slated for Fall 2018 at the LA gallery.
How long have you been a fashion photographer? Did you start as an assistant or on your own?
I have been a photographer for 35 years. And I did start out initially as an assistant.
Do you have a favorite series of photos and why?
I did a couture book for Saks Fifth Avenue years ago, and it was probably one of my favorites. Another favorite, as a whole, is my polaroid book.
Who is your favorite photographer and why?
Irvin Penn. But it’s hard to say why; I just love his images.
On the topic of your book on polaroids, what makes that medium so magical to you?
I think just how spontaneous the process is.
Do you have any thoughts on the fashion world, which seeks what is "new and different", ironically using the same photographers too often? (such as Bruce Weber, Mario Testino, and Steven Meisel)
